The Journal of Gynecological Cancer recently published the meeting report for the 12th Ovarian Cancer Research Symposium. The symposium was organized by the Rivkin Center in partnership with the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) at the University of Washington Campus in Seattle, WA from September 13-15, 2018. The three-day event brought together a record 377 attendees from across the United States and the world.
Through its research symposia, the Rivkin Center serves as the central force in bringing together the international ovarian cancer research and clinical communities. The symposium provides a critical platform for the exchange of new knowledge and establishing dynamic research connections to advance ovarian cancer research. The 2018 symposium focused on four major areas:
- Detection and Prevention of Ovarian Cancer
- Genomics and Molecular Mechanisms of Ovarian Cancer
- Tumor Microenvironment and Immunology of Ovarian Cancer
- Novel Therapeutics: Response and Resistance of Ovarian Cancer.
Members of the Department of Defense Ovarian Cancer Academy program (OCA) write the review articles in the meeting report, which summarize research from all four focus areas. The OCA is comprised of mentored early-career ovarian cancer investigators. These investigators also participate in abstract review and session moderation for the symposium.
The 12th Biennial Ovarian Cancer Research Symposium also included a new panel on the Role of Advocates in Ovarian Cancer Research. Sachia Powell — an ovarian cancer survivor, instructor in the Rivkin Center’s education program, and a consumer reviewer for the DoD — wrote a summary of the proceedings and reflections on the panel and the broader role advocates can play in facilitating patient-centric research as part of the meeting report.
The 13th Ovarian Cancer Research Symposium will be held on September 26-28, 2020 at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Seattle.
