2020 Rivkin Scientific Grants Announced

The Rivkin Center is proud to announce that we have awarded $810,000 in ovarian cancer research grants to nine scientists across the globe. Our unique approach to seed funding provides ovarian cancer researchers leverage to access larger pots of federal funds in order to make a major impact in moving science forward. To date, the Rivkin Center has funded $14 million in ovarian cancer research grants. For every dollar that the Rivkin Center invests in research, Rivkin Awardees bring in an additional $11.5 in outside funding to further their life-saving work in ovarian cancer.

Our 2020 awardees will focus on high impact research projects investigating the biological processes that cause ovarian cancer, developing novel therapies to treat the disease, using the immune system to combat ovarian cancer, and overcoming resistance to chemotherapy. The funded studies include six Pilot Study Awards which provide funding for novel ideas and innovative approaches to research questions that venture out of the scientific mainstream (More info on funded Pilot Studies). We also funded three Scientific Scholar Awards, designed to attract new investigators to ovarian cancer research and support the novel ideas they bring to the table (More info on funded Scientific Scholars).

Ovarian cancer kills approximately 14,000 women every year in the United States. Despite being the most deadly gynecological cancer, ovarian cancer continues to be underfunded by federal funding agencies when compared to other cancers. The Rivkin Center plays a pivotal role in helping the forward progress of ovarian cancer research to better understand prevention, improve early detection, and discover new life-saving treatments.

“Recent, instrumental advancements in ovarian cancer treatment are a result of many years of scientists working to find answers to this devastating disease,” says Dr. Saul Rivkin, founder of the Rivkin Center and retired medical oncologist at Swedish Cancer Institute. “We are excited and proud to fund the best and brightest researchers who are on the cutting-edge of science, and support their novels ideas that will help us get closer to a cure for ovarian cancer.”

The mission of the Rivkin Center is to improve women’s health by helping them prevent, detect early, and survive ovarian and breast cancer. We do this by investing in cutting-edge ovarian cancer research, educating women on how to prevent and detect ovarian and breast cancer as early as possible, and fostering an ever-growing community of survivors, patients, researchers, clinicians, advocates, and supporters.
