Tips for Ensuring Reliable Information in Online Groups

Connecting with others who share similar experiences can be invaluable. However, before you explore online communities, it's crucial to ensure that the information shared is reliable.

Reputation: Look for groups affiliated with reputable organizations, like the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC) or Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance (OCRA).

  • Moderation by Healthcare Professionals: Check if the group is moderated by professionals. Groups like CancerCare's ovarian cancer support group are led by oncology social workers offering expert guidance.
  • Be Cautious of Overly Positive Claims: Be wary of miracle cures.
  • Look for Cited Sources: Reliable groups cite peer-reviewed studies or medical guidelines.
  • Understand the Motivations Behind Shared Information: Be cautious of users promoting products or services.
  • Cross-Reference Information: Verify details through reputable medical websites.
  • Value Personal Experiences but Consult Your Healthcare Team: Always consult your healthcare team for individual medical advice.
  • Use Groups for Emotional Support: Focus on emotional support, not medical decision-making.
  • Report Inaccurate Information: Report harmful information to moderators.
