Ever since I was a little girl, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. And now I am so grateful to say that I’ve achieved my goal. After I graduated from college, I moved to China and started my career in public health with a focus on HIV education.
This story took a sharp turn when I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 27 after having no family history and thinking cancer only happened to old white men. I had to move home for treatment and I took a year off of work and received a lumpectomy and 5 years of hormone treatment. My public health career quickly pivoted from HIV to Cancer Prevention Education and I soon joined the Rivkin team.
I learned that cancer does not discriminate by age or race and that we are all susceptible but that we can be our own best advocate if we are given tools and some simple education. I quickly saw the impact of sharing my story as well as educating young people that they are their own best advocate. I believe as women our wisdom comes from our intuition and I look forward to continuing to educate people about their bodies.
